Are we paying for convenience with our health?

Take a moment to be calm.
To be still.
To reflect.
Most of us are living in a constant state of motion. We wake up, grab our phones, and before our feet even hit the floor, we’re looking at other people’s lives. We scroll, we consume, we compare. When we finally have a few minutes to ourselves, we fill them with screens, sound, and noise. Even when we think we’re resting, we’re not.
We’re overstimulated and undernourished. We’re bombarded with information that doesn’t serve us, and with every notification, every headline, every update, our nervous systems become more and more dysregulated. We carry stress in our shoulders, in our guts, in our hearts, and we call it normal.
But it’s not.
Stillness
When was the last time you sat outside, really sat there, and just listened? No music, no phone, no podcast, no distractions. Just birdsong, wind, sun on your skin. The sound of your own breathing.
Most of us have forgotten how to do that. And because we’ve forgotten, our bodies are starving for it.
We eat food that was never meant to be eaten. We put chemicals on our skin that were never meant to be absorbed. We fill our minds with noise that was never meant to be heard. And then we wonder why we’re inflamed, why we’re anxious, why we can’t sleep.
Add to that the weight of stress, unresolved trauma, and the pace of modern life, and it’s no surprise that people everywhere are burned out, depressed, and sick. The body keeps the score. Eventually, it catches up.
Growing Up in Panama
I grew up in Panama, near the jungle. My childhood was spent outdoors; barefoot in the rainforest, climbing mango trees, sliding down muddy slopes into the river. There were no devices, no social media, no endless noise. When I wasn’t outside, I was talking with people, drawing, reading books, having real conversations.
It was a happy, healthy way to grow up.
Then came the years of technology, and everything shifted. We gained convenience, but we lost presence. Yes, there’s value in being able to order what you need with a few clicks or to find answers instantly. But something sacred was traded away. We forgot how to be with ourselves, how to wait, how to tend, how to make.
The Ancient Rhythms
Our ancestors built their homes, grew their food, and lived with the land. Their bodies moved. Their minds rested. Their days were full of work, but also full of connection. Now, everything is designed for speed and ease. But ease isn’t the same as peace.
We’re paying for convenience with our health. The average person spends most of their day indoors, under artificial light, breathing stale air, eating processed food, and consuming stress disguised as entertainment. The result is a society that’s chronically inflamed; physically, mentally, emotionally.
When the body is disconnected from what’s real, real food, real movement, real rest, it begins to break down. No supplement or pharmaceutical can replace time spent in nature, hands in the soil, sunlight on skin.
Reconnecting to Our Roots
We’re meant to walk, to breathe fresh air, to touch the earth. We’re meant to listen; to the rhythm of our breath, to the sounds of water, to silence. We’re meant to use our hands, to make things, to cook, to mend, to create. These simple, ordinary actions recalibrate us. They bring us back into rhythm with the natural world and with ourselves.
I think many people reach a point where they realize they’ve had enough. Enough of the noise, the rush, the synthetic everything. There’s a hunger to come back to something real.
I invite you to be rooted and wild.
To be rooted is to ground yourself in what nourishes; good soil, good food, good rest, real connection. To be wild is to live freely, to return to the natural state of being alive, curious, and whole.
When we step outside, when we slow down, when we start cooking real food again, growing herbs, breathing deeply, moving intentionally; we remember. We remember that life isn’t meant to be lived behind a screen. We remember that healing doesn’t come from escape or consumption. It comes from returning.
A Quiet Invitation
So, wherever you are reading this, I invite you to pause.
Think about your life right now.
What’s weighing on you?
What feels out of alignment?
What have you ignored for too long?
Take a deep breath.
Exhale slowly.
Imagine your life lighter, calmer, more spacious. Imagine feeling grounded in your body and connected to the world around you. It’s not impossible. It’s not even complicated.
It begins with small choices.
Go outside.
Turn off the noise.
Make something with your hands.
Eat food that looks like it came from the earth.
Breathe.
Healing is not a mystery. It’s a remembering.
Stay rooted.
Stay wild.
Stay present.
