Overview

Swedish Massage is one of the most commonly offered massage techniques. It’s sometimes called a Classic Massage. The technique is designed to promote relaxation throughout the entire body by releasing muscle tension. (HealthLine)

Swedish Massage is gentler than Deep Tissue Massage and better suited for people interested in relaxation and tension relief. (HealthLine)

The Swedish Massage consists of a series of maneuvers performed mainly on muscles and joints. It is a vigorous system of treatments designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation with basic strokes all flowing toward the heart.

The Swedish Massage was developed by Pehr Heinrick Ling (1776-1839) in order to enhance the performances of athletes. Today, Swedish is one of the most widely taught and practiced massages in Quebec and the West.

The Swedish Massage is a versatile technique providing many benefits. Both toning and relaxing for muscles, this technique also increases blood and lymphatic flow as well as toxins’ elimination. It can be practiced both for therapeutic or relaxation purposes. The Massage Therapist will tailor the rhythm and depth of their procedures according to the needs of the client.

The Swedish Massage allows relaxation as well as mind rest. Particularly soothing, it is recognized for its ability to lessen the effects of stress on the body. (Réseau des massothérapeutes professionels du Québec/Network of Professional Massage Therapists of Quebec)

Swedish Massage is very gentle and is often used to promote relaxation, improve blood flow, and relieve muscle tension. The Therapist uses long, gliding strokes and kneading and tapping techniques on the top layer of muscles in the direction of blood flow to the heart. This may also include moving the joints gently to improve range of motion.

Deep tissue massage is more active and intense. It is used to treat long-lasting muscle tension. The Therapist applies slow strokes (with the fingers, thumbs, and elbows) using intense pressure to reach deeper layers of the muscles than those reached with a Swedish massage technique.
