Reflexology is the study of reflexes and is one of the safest and least invasive Complementary therapeutic practices available.

Reflexology is a system of natural  therapeutic methods derived from studies based on the principle that there are reflexes in your body that map to other parts, glands, and organs of your body.

Unlike other therapies which manipulate bones or muscle tissues, Reflexology can provide much needed relief through working the body reflex that ails you on a part of the body that does not.

Different types of Reflexology include:

  • Foot
  • Hand
  • Ear
  • Facial
  • Maternity
  • Cranio-Sacral (Reflexology Association of Canada)

Reflexology is a science and art based on the principle that there are reflexes in your feet, hands, and ears. Your feet, hands, and ears are microcosms of your body, reflecting your entire body—all glands and organs.

Reflexology is NOT a foot massage. Massage is the palpation of soft tissue and muscle whereas Reflexology is the stimulation of nerve pathways.

By applying pressure with specific thumb and finger techniques, Reflexology can reduce tension, promote relaxation, increase circulation, and bring your body back to balance. (Canadian Reflexology School)

The body has the ability to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of “imbalance” and vital body systems can be blocked, preventing the body from functioning optimally.

Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural balance and facilitate healing. For each person, the application and the effect of the therapy are unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances and by working on these points, the Reflexology Therapist can release these blockages. (Reflexology Association of Canada)

Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet, hands, and ears. It’s based on a theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. People who practice this technique are called Reflexologists. Reflexologists believe that applying pressure to these parts offers a range of health benefits.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Reflexology rests on the ancient Chinese belief in qi (pronounced “chee”), or “vital energy.” According to this belief, qi flows through each person. When a person feels stressed, their body blocks qi. This can cause an imbalance in the body that leads to illness. Reflexology aims to keep qi flowing through the body, keeping it balanced and disease free.

In Chinese Medicine, different body parts correspond with different pressure points on the body. Reflexologists use maps of these points in the feet, hands, and ears to determine where they should apply pressure. They believe their touch sends energy flowing through a person’s body until it reaches the area in need of healing.
